Transition from the ISO 22000:2005 to the new ISO 22000:2018

on . Posted in News

 QS Quality Services would like to inform you about the changes resulting from the issue of the new standard ISO 22000:2018 published on June 18th 2018.

 The development of new edition of ISO 22000 follows the new common ISO framework for management system standards, which includes a unified high-level structure (HLS), as well as common texts and terminology to ensure accordance and compatibility of integration with other ISO standards (e.g. ISO 9001); new specific requirements have also been included that may require some changes to your organization's management system.

If you are going to adapt the MS to the migration of the new standard, we recommend:

  • (se applicabile) to resolve any non-compliance/findings for the ISO 22000:2005 standard issued during the previous verification by QS or other CB, to allow the transition to ISO 22000:2018

  • to examine in depth the contents and requirements of the new standard

  • to realize an analysis of the standard in question to identify the organization’s MS gaps in relation to the new requirements;

  • to develop a transition plan to implement the new requirements or directly implement the changes to the system;

  • to train and inform all the interested parties that have an impact on the effectiveness of the Food safety management system in order to comply with the expected competence requirements;

  • to agree with QS a transition plan in accordance with the new standard.

The new standard ISO 22000:2018 standard has been issued on 18 June 2018 and to entry into force, the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) has established a transitional period of 3 years from its publication.

In base a tali documenti, le certificazioni rilasciate in conformità alla ISO 22000:2005, emesse dopo la pubblicazione del nuovo standard, perderanno automaticamente la loro validità dopo tre anni a partire da tale data.

This means that the validity of the certificates issued in compliance with the ISO 22000:2005 are not valid after the end of the transition period 17 June 2021, regardless of the actual expiry date that may be later. Therefore, the adoption of the new standard and the relative assessment of the effective implementation of the system should be carried out no later than 3 years after the publication of the ISO 22000:2018.

For better time and cost optimization, we invite QS customers to carry out transition assessment during the recertification audit or during the annual surveillance audit as planned by your certification cycle.

In any case, for the certification in compliance with the new standard, it will be necessary to stipulate a new contract for new companies or update the existing contract for companies under surveillance or renewal of certification.

In case the customer chooses to perform the migration assessment separately from the planned audit, an offer will be issued to perform an extraordinary audit

QS is going to inform its own customers as soon as the accreditation process has been completed and authorized by ESYD in accordance with ISO 22000:2018.

Until to 3 years from the publication of the new ISO 22000:2018, new certifications and renewals issued for both editions of ISO 22000:2005 ed ISO 22000:2018.

The expiry date of the ISO 22000:2005 certifications issued during the transitional period of 3 years shall correspond to the end of this period on (17 June 2020) even if the effective deadline of the certification cycle will be later than that date.

Attention: from 18 June 2020 it will not be possible to issue new certifications or renewals in compliance with the ISO 22000:2005

After 3 years from the publication of the new ISO 22000:2018, the ISO 22000:2005 certification issued will cease to be valid and will be revoked at the same time.
